History

ABN AMRO Private Banking in Gibraltar, was incorporated in 1964 under the original name of Mediterranean Bank Limited. In 1976 it changed to Algemene Bank Gibraltar Ltd. and in August 1998 all assets and liabilities of this subsidiary were transferred to ABN AMRO Bank N.V. Gibraltar branch. We are one of the oldest locally established banks on the Rock with a great knowledge and experience in both local and offshore affairs. From its earliest days, ABN AMRO has played a significant role in the development of trade on this strategically located peninsula.

In recent years ABN AMRO Gibraltar has increasingly provided solutions and services to meet investment requirements of clients in Gibraltar and abroad. It is evident that the international support from the ABN AMRO Bank network gives us a clear advantage over our competitors. In 2001 the whole operation relocated to new premises in Europort.

The Rock of Gibraltar is a peninsula with an area of 2.75 square miles linked to the southern tip of Spain and facing the northern coast of Africa. In 1704 Gibraltar became a British dependent territory and, through Great Britain, joined the European Union in 1973. However, Gibraltar has managed to obtain certain concessions from European Law. Gibraltar does not apply Value Added Tax (VAT) or Common Custom Tariff on the common agriculture policy.
